How to Decoupage Kitchen Tables With Take-Out Menus

Take recycling to a new level. Transform your dining room table's surface from a boring blank slate into a collage of old takeout menus with a few supplies from the craft store and a couple days' time. Rescue an old beat up table from the thrift store to use for this project for an inexpensive decoration.

Instructions

    1

Sand the top and edges of the tabletop. Brush or blow away any dust from the sanding.

    2

Paint an area large enough for the first takeout menu in the center of the table with decoupage medium using a foam brush. Place the menu in the coated area of the tabletop. Smooth the menu with your hands to get out any air bubbles trapped between the menu and the tabletop.

    3

Paint another layer of decoupage medium over the top of the menu. Paint the medium past the edges of the menu to thoroughly seal it to the tabletop.

    4

Paint an area large enough for the next menu with the decoupage medium. Make the area slightly overlap the first menu so the tabletop is completely covered when you are done. Place the menu on the table, smooth it out and paint over it with more medium. Continue to cover the top of the table in this manner.

    5

Paint the edge of the tabletop and the outside edge of the bottom with decoupage medium and wrap the take out menus over the edge to the underside of the tabletop when you get to that point. Paint over the top of these menus the same as the rest, including on the underside of the table, so they're sealed in place.

    6

Let the table dry for 24 hours. Paint another layer of decoupage medium over the entire top, edge and underside once the table is dry. Let this coat dry for 24 hours before using the table.

How to Decorate a Long TableWith Centerpieces for a Wedding

How to Decorate a Long TableWith Centerpieces for a Wedding

Decorating a long table with centerpieces for a wedding presents unique obstacles. A large centerpiece will not have the same visual impact on a long table as it will on the center of a smaller round table, so decorations should focus on creating a dramatic statement that continues down the entire table. Layering decorations with texture and color, then accenting them with several small centerpieces creates a sophisticated look with practical benefits for a wedding reception.

Instructions

    1

Cover tables with long tablecloths to build a colorful, textured base for your decorations. Table cloths do not have to be rented table linens; long lengths on fabric purchased from a craft store can be hemmed for a custom table covering. Unconventional fabrics make creative table cloths as well; rustic country wedding tables can be decorated with long pieces of burlap or unbleached cotton, while plastic table cloths at a beach or garden wedding can be upgraded when layered with swaths of ethereal tulle that billow in the breeze.

    2

Layer a runner over the center of the table to provide another level of visual interest. A runner is typically a narrow strip of fabric, roughly 6 to 8 inches smaller than the width of the table on both sides. You can layer one wedding color as the table cloth and the other as a runner, but unique materials can be spread down the center of the table as a creative runner alternative. Silk rose petals make a luscious runner when scattered down the center of a long table, while smooth, round river stones are elegant and sculptural additions to a long table at a mountain wedding. Seasonal touches are appropriate for weddings throughout the year.

    3

Accent your tablecloths and runners with flowers, candles and other romantic touches. Keep arrangements low to avoid blocking guests' views of their table mates and the proceedings on the dance floor. Float blossoms or votive candles in shallow glass bowls filled with water for an inexpensive, elegant and guest-friendly centerpiece. Votive holders running the length of a long table fill the reception hall with light and are far easier for guests to see past than tall, ornate candelabras. If your wedding flowers incorporate tall blossoms like gladiolas, calla lilies and irises, ask your florist to design arrangements where the flowers can be laid on long tables instead of standing upright.

    4

Place centerpieces at regular intervals down the center of the table. For tables that seat eight, one medium-sized centerpiece in the center of the table is sufficient, but for tables that seat 10 or more, consider placing smaller centerpieces every three seats for a coherent look. Take a seat behind your centerpieces before the wedding begins to ensure that sight lines are not compromised by your arrangements, then adjust if necessary.

Putting Tile on a Wooden Kitchen Table

Putting Tile on a Wooden Kitchen Table

Customize a wooden kitchen table with a do-it-yourself tiling project to make a one-of-a-kind statement for your home. Purchase porcelain or ceramic tile to match the style of the kitchen decor. Create a simple straight-forward design or set up an elaborate pattern with different tile sizes and colors. Match the color of the tiling with colored grout that blends in or causes the look to pop with contrast. The finished project is a decorative, utilitarian table that is easy to clean. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Measure the table to determine how many tiles will be needed for the project. Write down the table measurement to take on the tile shopping trip.

    2

Buy enough tile pieces to cover the table. Shop for sales, color and size that will work best for the project. An alternative choice is a colorful mosaic made with broken tiles. Buy bullnose tile to finish the edging.

    3

Place the tiles on the tabletop. Arrange the tiles until the design is appropriate for this project. If corners of the tile must be rounded, use tile nippers to carefully snip the pieces off.

    4

Remove and stack each row of tiles to keep them in order of placement.

    5

Spread mastik or tile adhesive onto a portion of the tabletop according to the package directions. Set the tiles onto the adhesive. Use a level when making rows of tiles to keep them aligned and even.

    6

Apply grout to the table top according to product instructions. Let the grout sit until firm. Wipe the grout film that develops on the tiles away with a clean damp sponge. Continue to wipe film until it is gone.

How to Decorate an End Table

How to Decorate an End Table

End tables are an important part of the furniture plan for a room. Ideally, you should have an end table within reach of every chair and on each end of a sofa. If two chairs are close together in a grouping, one table between the two works well. End tables essential for lamp placement and are convenient places to put eyeglasses, cups and books. Decorating end tables is easy if you keep in mind that simple and uncluttered are the keys. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1
    Bedrooms need end tables too.
    Bedrooms need end tables too.

Place end tables on both sides of a sofa or love seat and next to large chairs. Groupings of chairs can share an end table, as long as it's within easy reach.

    2
Table lamps provide light for reading.
Table lamps provide light for reading.

Place lamps on end tables, as needed. Someone sitting in a chair or on a sofa should have the illumination needed for comfortable reading. Consider matching table lamps for each end of a sofa, although you may want to stay away from a look that's overly matchy-matchy.

    3

Place a small stack of your favorite books, no more than two or three, near some of the lamps for easy access. A small decorative tray can also be placed near the front of a table to hold glasses, remote controls or other small items. Use the table space to highlight other accent pieces. Small framed photos or a favorite decorative vase can also be used. Keep it simple, with only one or two accent pieces on each table.

    4
Wicker baskets can add color, texture and storage to your room.
Wicker baskets can add color, texture and storage to your room.

Place a wicker basket on the floor under the table or on a lower shelf, depending on your table design. One of the most needed items in any room is storage, and that's what a basket provides. In one basket, you could place a selection of the current magazines. In another you could put an extra throw for the sofa or a pillow. A third could hold your children's favorite games or movies. The baskets will keep what might become clutter under control.

How to Make Unique End Tables

Decorating a room in an eclectic or vintage style and using outdoor decor inside your home is a great way to incorporate unique end tables. Items that started out their functional life as something else can be found in your attic, basement and even your yard. Repurpose these objects to create whimsical and unique end tables that are sure to be a conversation starter. These unique end tables are made from an old antique sewing machine with an iron base and a large clay flower crock. They are simple to make and each can be completed within an afternoon. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Antique Sewing Machine End Table

    1

Disconnect and remove the sewing machine from the inside of the sewing machine cabinet. Place the sewing machine cabinet upside down on your work surface. Remove the wood sewing cabinet from the antique iron sewing machine stand using the drill and a screwdriver bit attachment. Set the wood sewing machine cabinet aside for use in another project.

    2

Place the old end table on your work surface with the top side down. Remove the legs from the tabletop using the drill and a screwdriver bit attachment. Center the iron sewing machine stand upside down on the underside of the end table tabletop. Using the drill and a small drill bit, drill pilot holes through the existing holes on the iron sewing machine stand and into the bottom of the tabletop. Attach the iron sewing machine stand to the tabletop using wood screws. Drilling pilot holes before attaching the wood screws will prevent the wood from splitting.

    3

Turn your unique antique sewing machine end table over. Sand the sides and top of the tabletop. Wipe the sanding particles from the tabletop using a tack cloth. Apply wood stain using the sponge brush to the tabletop surface and allow it to dry. Apply polyurethane over the wood stain and allow it to dry.

Flower Crock End Table

    4

Cut the floral foam brick to fit the inside of an 8-inch clay flowerpot, using a serrated knife. Apply hot glue to the inside sides and bottom of the pot and insert the floral foam. Apply hot glue to the top of the foam and cover with Spanish moss. Insert the stem of the silk flower bouquet into the center of the foam.

    5

Place the flowerpot down into a 24-inch flower crock. It is not necessary to glue the flowerpot bottom to the crock. This will allow you to replace your flowers with other objects when the mood strikes you. Place Spanish moss around the outside of the small flowerpot, fluffing to fill the space.

    6

Space the four self-adhesive rubber bumpers evenly on the rim of the large flower crock. Place a 24-inch round table top on the bumpers. This will cushion the glass and prevent it from becoming scratched.

How to Build a Console Table

Console tables are essential complimentary pieces of furniture that add a great deal of aesthetic appeal to your modern living room. In addition to its aesthetic appeal, building a console table on your own can save you hundreds of dollars over what you would have paid at a furniture store. While the process may seem extremely difficult, it is actually quite simple if you follow the proper instructions. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Take four 28" pieces of 2x4 wood and cut the piece of MDF wood in a 15"x48" piece using a circular saw. Use a pencil to draw little marks in the corners at 1 1/2" from the long side. Marks should be made a 2 1/2" and 3 3/4" in from that point as well. Drill pilot holes at all of these points.

    2

Stand the table top up so that the pilot holes are facing towards you while laying an extra piece of MDF on the floor next to it. Grab an extra piece of 2x4" wood and put it flush with the table top and piece of MDF. This piece of wood provides an exact measurement of where your leg will go. Attach two screws to the pilot holes to secure the first leg to the table top. Continue until all four legs have been attached.

    3

Cut two 2x4" pieces of wood at 10 1/8" long and two more at 41 3/4" long to act as support beams for the table. Slide one of the 10 1/8" pieces into one of the shorter sides of the table top between two of the legs. Drill two pilot holes into the leg posts and screw this piece of wood in between them. Repeat this step for the other side of the table.

    4

Put one 41 3/4" piece of wood in between the two pieces of wood you just attached. Drill two pilot holes on both sides and screw them into the table. Repeat this step for all boards. Add a coat of wood stain or paint as desired.

How to Retrieve Table Names From a Database

How to Retrieve Table Names From a Database

All relational databases that store data are composed of tables. Visually, a table is a group of rows and columns; each column describes a specific unit of data and each row contains the data itself. Tables are uniquely named within a database, ideally in a way that describes the data stored in the table. If the table names in a database are unclear, unknown or inconsistent, administrators may need to list the tables in order to use them. Most commonly used databases provide commands that allow users to list the tables they house.

Instructions

Retrieving Table Names From a MySQL Database

    1

Run the MySQL command line utility and connect to MySQL.

    2

Indicate the database you want to work with, where "database" is the MySQL database that contains the tables you want to list.

    mysql>use "database";

    3

List the tables using the "show tables" command.

    mysql>list tables;

Retrieving Table Names From an Oracle Express Database

    4

Run the SQL*Plus command line utility and connect to Oracle Express.

    5

Determine which schema contains the tables you want to list. Oracle stores groupings of tables as schemas that correspond to usernames.

    6

List the tables by querying the ALL_TABLES table, where 'USERNAME' is the schema that contains the group of tables you want to list.

    SQL>select table_name from all_tables where owner='USERNAME';

Retrieving Table Names from a SQL Server Express Database

    7

Run the sqlcmd command line utility and connect to SQL Server Express.

    8

Indicate the database you want to work with, where "database" is the SQL Server Express database that contains the sysobjects table you want to query.

    1>use "database"

    2>GO

    9

List the tables in the database by running a query against the sysobjects system table. The xtype='U' indicates that the query should list only table objects.

1>select name from sysobjects where xtype='U'

    2>GO

How to Decorate Kitchen Tables With Flowers & Candles

How to Decorate Kitchen Tables With Flowers & Candles

Flowers and candles go together perfectly to form table centerpieces for any occasion. Whether you prefer a traditional, formal style, lean towards a modern look or like a country decorating theme, you can decorate your kitchen table with a lovely arrangement that will complement your style. You might be decorating for a dinner party, a holiday get-together, or just want to make your daily table more special -- all of these deserve a beautiful centerpiece. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Set a large pillar candle on a decorative holder, and surround the base with flowers.

    2

Place tea lights in clear or colored glass holders, arrange on a tray, and use rose petals to create a bed of color around the candles.

    3

Celebrate a birthday by removing the stems from carnations, filling a small pot with the ruffled blooms, and placing a lit candle on top. The flowers should be fit tightly so they form a mound and the arrangement resembles a cupcake with a candle on top.

    4

Fill a shallow bowl halfway with water, and place tea lights in various colors so they are above the water line. Float a orchid or lily in the bowl between the candles.

    5

Purchase a bouquet of mixed flowers. Cut the stems short, and use floral foam to arrange the flowers in a small basket. Place one or two long tapers in the middle of the arrangement, being sure they stick up far enough above the flowers to burn safely.

    6

Decorate a small, floral foam wreath with roses, carnations and greenery, and set a pillar candle in the middle.

    7

Start with a shallow tray and fill with an abundance of flowers and greenery of varying heights, letting some of the greenery spill over the edge. Place a pillar candle in a glass holder towards the center, matching the color of the candle to the color of the flowers.

    8

Stagger pillar candles of varying heights to form a display, and surround the base with two or three large blooms.

How to Identify Antique Tables

If you love antiques and have collected a few pieces over the years, you may know a lot about pieces of furniture, such as tables. If not, you should learn more about the subject. Although many antique dealers would like you to think every table in their shop is a rare find, some may be clever reproductions or not true antiques. Knowing what to look for in an antique table can help you separate the real from the fake and give you better information with which to hunt for antiques.

Instructions

    1

Examine the table carefully. Look for signs of usage. An antique table has probably been passed down through several generations, and although some may be well-cared for, they should not be in perfect condition. Nicks, scuffs and cracked wood are all part of the charm of a true antique piece.

    2

Look at the boards that make up the table. Because no machines were used to make antique tables, some of the boards may be irregular but look fine to the unpracticed eye.

    3

Remove the drawers from the table. Many antique dining room and side tables had drawers for linens and silver. Look at the back of the drawers and the way they are joined. Antique drawers will have dovetail joints, rather than machine-cut straight joints that are nailed and screwed together.

    4

Examine the legs with an antique table leg guide. You can identify an antique piece's originals and style by looking at the legs. A good guide will give you the name of the style, along with a general date that the style was popular.

    5

Have the table appraised by an antiques dealer who has nothing to do with the transaction for an honest, unbiased opinion. You can have the dealer look at the table in person, or if he lives farther away, take a good quality, digital picture of the piece and e-mail it. He can tell you more about the piece and whether or not it is a true antique table.

Design Ideas for the Top of the Entry Table

Design Ideas for the Top of the Entry Table

An entry table makes a statement about you and many times becomes the first impression of your home to visitors. Set up the table with items resembling the colors of the home and pick furniture that is scaled to the space. A floral arrangement or live plants give visual impact. Does this Spark an idea?

Console Table

For a slim-width console table, scale down your tabletop design. Place a small flower arrangement on one side of the entry table, such as a vase of flowers, a potted plant, such as mother-in-law's tongue, which grows upward, or a tall, slender grouping of bamboo stalks in a decorative container. Add a compartmentalized basket to hold your keys, mail and change in the center. A table lamp or a grouping of taper candles brings harmony to the table design, as these items offset the flower arrangement on the other side.

Large Rectangular Table

Place a floral arrangement in the center of the table and group a set of three decorative pieces on one end with three candles of similar width on the other. Or, position two table lamps on opposite ends of the table and arrange small potted plants between the two. Another option is grouping a collection of pottery, or other decorative items, on one side of the table and balancing it with several tapered candles or a flower arrangement on the other. Include a box to hold small items, such as keys or mail.

Half-Moon Table

A half-moon table suggests that the weight of the design belongs in the center where the table is widest. Place thinner pieces on the sides of the table, such as groupings of taper candles, tall, thin plants or a vase of decorative greenery, table lamps and family photographs. Toward the wider portion of the table, add a basket to hold small items, such as key chains, cards or mail. Place a floral display in the widest section of the table.

Round Table

A large foyer space allows you to use a round table as your entry table. A round table display is usually ornamental and for display purposes. Displays include one massive, elaborate floral arrangement in the center with greenery sprawling over the table or it could be more refined, with a large wooden bowl or platter of fresh fruit. Another option includes a low-lying, horizontal floral display placed in front of a set of taper candles grouped together into a half-moon behind the arrangement.

How to Price a Billiards Table for Resale

How to Price a Billiards Table for Resale

Selling your billiards table can help you recover some of the money you spent on it. If your billiards table has appreciated in value, if you bought it used to begin with or you just got a great deal on it, you may even get back more than you originally spent. Determining how to price your billiards table for resale can help you to maximize the return on your investment.

Instructions

    1

Compare prices of similar billiards tables. Search for tables that are being sold in your area. Check online sites, such as eBay and Craigslist, to find out what other sellers are asking for their used tables.

    2

Solicit offers from billiards table dealers in your area. Contact between three and five dealers and provide details of your used table. Include its condition and provide pictures. Ask the dealers to make you an offer. If they are not interested in buying your table, they may at least give you an estimate of what the table is worth. Comparing several offers and estimates will help you get a better feel for what your used billiards table is worth.

    3

Ask a local dealer to appraise your billiards table. This is especially important if your table is unique or valuable, or if it's an antique . An experienced appraiser can assess the condition of the table and provide a documented estimate. Use this estimate to set an accurate price for your table and to provide justification for the price when you show the table to potential buyers.

How to Make a Folding Picnic Table

Folding picnic tables can take several forms. Among the references and resources listed for this article, you'll find a how-to video and building plans for an elaborate pair of benches that can be united to form a folding picnic table. For the less industrious there are plans for smaller tables, too, but for the backyard entertainer who wants a simple folding picnic table that is inexpensive and easy to stow away, the trestle-top picnic table is the way to go.

Why a trestle top? For one, you don't want benches attached to the table like a conventional picnic table design. Have you ever watched someone laden with a paper plate full of picnic fare try to crawl over one of those fixed-in-place benches and sit down? It is better to arrange chairs around the table or provide portable benches that can be moved back and forth as picnickers come and go. Also, attached benches limit the alternative use of the table--as a buffet table, for example. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Build the table top out of one-inch by six-inch pine boards. Buy the straightest, least warped ones your lumber yard has to offer, but realize you'll be able to overcome slight warp-ages when it comes to gluing and clamping the boards together. Run the boards through a planer, if necessary, to attain even thickness and cut them to a uniform length. Lay them on a flat surface and apply wood glue to the joining edges. Use large wood clamps to hold the boards together while the glue dries. Six boards glued edge to edge will make a table top of conventional width.

    2

Sand the tabletop smooth using a belt sander.

    3

Cut eight two-inch by four-inch table legs to the desired table height and screw them into the sawhorse brackets using wood screws and a cordless screw driver. Trim the bottoms of the table legs using a compound miter saw so the legs stand square on the ground when the sawhorse brackets are extended.

    4

Cut two-inch by four-inch boards slightly less long than the tabletop is wide and clamp them in the sawhorse brackets so the brackets with legs extended form four corner legs of the table. The support boards under either end of the tabletop provide lateral support.

    5

Position the one-inch by six-inch board top on the four corner legs and supporting end boards. The end result is a quite stable though thoroughly portable picnic table that was not too costly to construct.

    6

When the picnic is over, remove the trestle top and end table leg-separating boards, fold up the corner legs and store all for the next picnic use.

Folding Chair & Table Storage

Folding Chair & Table Storage

Folding chairs and tables are convenient furniture to maintain in a household. The arrival of unannounced dinner company, craft projects or family game night can benefit from the ease of setting up a folding table and chairs. When the need for the folding furniture has passed, the tables and chairs fold almost flat for storage. Does this Spark an idea?

Attic Storage

In regions of the country that see extreme temperature shifts, the materials that comprise the folding table and chairs should be considered. Vinyl and other plastics used in attached cushions or protective tabletops can crack and split in hot and cold climates. Items with plastic, rubber or vinyl parts should be stored between 41 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. The hotter the temperature, the faster the materials deteriorate. Mice and other small creatures can burrow into or chew on fabric chair cushions.

Garage Storage

Garages have some of the same storage problems that attics have as far as potential critter invasion and drastic temperature changes, but if the folding table and chairs are properly stored in a zip or hook and loop tape closure storage bag, the likelihood of damage is reduced. Garages see more traffic than do attic spaces, so rodent and bird activity is less plausible than in dark, isolated attics. Large folding banquet tables store well in garages and usually have to be stored where there is ample space due to the table size.

Closet Storage

Store a folding table and folding chairs in a storage bag at the back of a closet to maximize the use of your closet space. The flat back wall is a good place to position a folding table. Chairs can be arranged to one side of the closet against the wall or stacked on top of each other on the closet floor if space is available. Because the closet is located inside the home, fabric and plastic materials used in the construction of attached cushions on folding chairs or padded tabletops on folding tables won't be affected by changing temperatures or rodents looking for a snack. You can store furniture without a storage bag in a closet without sustaining damage to the table or chairs.

Behind or Beneath Large Furniture

Slide a folded table and chairs beneath a bed to utilize out of the way storage space. Place the table onto the floor with the tabletop facing down and the folded legs facing up. Place a towel or blanket over the folded legs. If your bed is high enough, stack two or more folding chairs on top of the towel or blanket and slide the stack beneath the bed. Folded tables and chairs can be slid between a wall and the backs of armoires, dressers, couches, china cupboards and other furniture wide and tall enough to conceal them.

How to Cover the Kitchen Table With Flashing

When considering redoing the surface of that old wooden kitchen table, why not give it a metal surface instead of painting or sanding and revarnishing it? A sheet of flashing over the surface of the table will give it a modern commercial look and make the surface easier to clean after use. And although it will take a little effort, the process of redoing the table with flashing instead of painting or varnishing will take less time, too. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Preparation

    1

Measure the length and width of the tabletop.

    2

Measure the side edge of the table and add 1 inch to it.

    3

Multiply the edge measurement by 2 and add it to the table top dimensions. For instance, if the side measures 1 1/2 inches, you will add 1 inch to that measurement (2 1/2 inches) and multiply it by 2 (5 inches total). Add that total to the measurement of the table top, so if the table top measures 3 feet by 2 feet, then your final dimensions will be 3 feet 5 inches by 2 feet 5 inches. This final measurement will determine the size for the piece of metal flashing you will use to cover the table.

    4

Center the flashing on the table and on the underside draw a line with a marker or pencil that will help you to lay it correctly when you are attaching it to the surface. You might prefer to trace the entire table or only mark out one or two sides.

Attaching the Flashing

    5

Apply heavy-duty adhesive to the surface of the table.

    6

Lay the flashing on the glued surface of the table, using the guide(s) you drew to make sure it is centered the first time, if possible. The adhesive should start setting within 10 minutes, so you won't have much time for do-overs.

    7

Wait 15 to 20 minutes to allow the flashing to adhere to the tabletop.

    8

Cut each of the four corners of the flashing with the tin snips. Start at the point of each corner and cut diagonally in to the corner of the table.

    9

Bend the flashing down over each side edge of the table. Doing this is very similar to wrapping a present. You should have enough extra to bend the flashing under the side edge so that the visible edge of your table covering will be smooth. You may find it helpful or even necessary to use the hammer to assist in bending the flashing, especially when you are folding it under the side edge.

    10

Secure the flashing to the table with the screws using the power screwdriver. Place the screws so that they are about 1/8 inch from the edge of the flashing on the underside of the table edge. Put two screws in each of the shorter sides of the table and three screws in each of the longer sides of the table.

    11

If there are sharp edges on the corners of the table, use the hammer to pound them down and smooth them out.

Pour 1/2 tsp. washing soda into a spray bottle. Add about 5 drops of white vinegar if you want to add a disinfecting element.

    2

Pour 2 cups water into the spray bottle and twist on the lid.

    3

Spray the mix over your kitchen table, and gently wipe off the solution, following the wood grain while wiping so you get no splintering.

    4

Dry the table with a clean rag if the table has a gloss finish, as this will prevent water spots or streaking. Skip this step if the kitchen table is unfinished.

Kitchen Counter Design Ideas

Kitchen Counter Design Ideas

Kitchen design can have a major impact on most residential design projects. Spending some time designing just the right countertop can go a long way for your kitchen's aesthetic appeal and functional practicality. Like paint, the countertop makes a bold statement in the overall look of the space. Many new materials and methods are available to give your kitchen an updated look. Does this Spark an idea?

Mosaic Countertop

You can make beautiful countertops that are also environmentally conscious by creating mosaic countertop surfaces using reclaimed (once used) ceramic pieces, mortar and grout. If you have an existing countertop, you can increase it's thickness by adding a layer of mortar on top of the counter, attaching the mosaic and using the grout to fill between the pieces of ceramic. This convenient option is helpful if your existing counter is outdated or damaged. You can also apply this effect for new countertops by using a solid board as a substrate.

Countertop-Dining Table

You can create a continuous look by having the countertop on the kitchen's island step down to form a dining table. The most effective way to do this is to use a malleable countertop material such as concrete or stainless steel, so that the counter and dining table can truly be one piece. If you are using a non-malleable material for the counters, you can create a similar effect by extending the island countertop over the table surface and attaching the table (made from the same counter material) to the side of the island so that the island is layered and the table looks like an extension of the counter.

Faux Granite

You can create a look of granite on your existing or new countertops, without having to buy real granite, by using a sponging technique to paint a granite finish. First, prime the surface if it is formica or other non-porous material, then paint the base granite color on as you would normally paint a wall surface. Then, use a natural sponge and three tones that contrast with the base but are similar to the flecks of color in granite. For example, if you're painting the base in black, use tan, cream and beige as the sponged colors. After this dries, add a water-based polyurethane sealer to add a glossy finish and water protection. For best results, use paints and sealers that contain no volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

How to Decorate a Kitchen Console

How to Decorate a Kitchen Console

A kitchen console is a small freestanding table that provides extra space. Some kitchen consoles consist of drawers and cabinets used for storage. Don't leave the console bleak and empty, but make use of the extra space by placing decorative items on it. Decorate the table with items that reflect the current kitchen decor and color design. Decorations that stimulate the senses, such as a bowl of fresh edibles or a vase of scented flowers, work well in a kitchen, encouraging the appetite. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Clear off all storage from the kitchen console. If the table consists of cabinets or drawers, organize them and store as many items as will fit comfortably.

    2

Fill a clean vase with fresh water. Cut fresh flowers or buy flowers that match the colors used in your decor. Put the flowers in the vase. Set the vase in the center of the console table.

    3

Adorn the table with a decorative, reflective tray and candles. Set the tray on the console table. Set a large pillar candle in the center of the tray. Surround the pillar candle with votive candles, all of the same scent, in small votive holders. Light the candles for a flickering display.

    4

Decorate the console with edible sweets. Fill a pedestal cake stand with small edibles, such as fudge or cupcakes. Set the cake stand in the center of the console. Fill two small bowls with candies and set them on either side of the cake stand.

    5

Fill a decorative bowl that complements your current decor with fresh fruit. Set the bowl in the center of the table.

    6

Cover the console table with a decorative tablecloth to dress it up. Fill a crystal pedestal bowl with clean water. Float flowers on the water. Set the bowl in the center of the console table. Push two matching pillar candles into crystal candle holders. Set a candle on either side of the bowl.

    7

Create a small display of your favorite kitchen collectibles on the table. If the kitchen is decorated with roosters, for example, set one ceramic rooster in the center of the table with a smaller ceramic rooster on either side.

What Is the Height of a Cafe Table?

What Is the Height of a Cafe Table?

Caf tables come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors. Heights vary as well. Some caf tables are tall for barstool seating or standing around, while others are shorter to accommodate smaller or shorter chairs. Whether you are building your own or buying a caf table, you should get a feel for the space you plan to put it first. Consider how you envision people using the table before you decide on which height to build or buy. Does this Spark an idea?

Standard Height

The standard height for a caf table with regular chairs is about 30 inches, or 2 1/2 feet off the ground. Height might vary by an inch or two in either direction. This allows the chair to tuck under the table when it's not being used, and for people to sit comfortably in chairs around the table. Their legs can typically fit under the table, and the table top is at an optimal height for eating or working on a laptop with a normal chair.

Tall Tables

Some caf tables are taller. They are designed for taller chairs or stools. These types of caf tables typically are about 42 inches, or 3 1/2 feet tall. The table tops are usually smaller in diameter than tables that sit lower to the ground, because a wider table top would make the table more top-heavy and more susceptible to falling over. Some of these types of caf tables also have a footrest near the bottom of the table.

Tallest Tables

Some caf tables are designed for people to stand around rather than sit. These tables can be 48 inches, or 4 feet tall. Some might be even taller. This height allows most adults to stand around and socialize, while giving them a surface on which to set food, drinks or other handheld items. They are likely found in cafes that also serve alcohol or stay open later; day crowds at cafes typically prefer to sit, as they are often working or eating.

Short Tables

Caf or coffee tables also come in short varieties. These tables are usually about knee height when sitting around them. They are for placing drinks, books or tabletop items on and are usually located next to couches rather than individual seats. These types of tables come in a variety of styles, from modern to rustic and everything in between.

How to Mix Console Furniture

How to Mix Console Furniture

Console furniture is any type of furniture that is meant to lean against the wall. Examples are small tables and bookshelves. Console tables often have more than one level. Some console tables have an upper level for displaying items such as picture frames, as well as a lower level for displaying an object such as a plant. In order to mix console furniture, decide where you desire to place the furniture, choose a style of console furniture and select the color that you want. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Place the console furniture on one wall, or on more than one wall. Console furniture is usually placed around the perimeter of the living room, depending on the amount of space.

    2

Choose the style of console furniture. When mixing console furniture, you should either decide on a single style, or two styles that are similar. Modern console furniture often has a solid design, while classical console furniture has more intricate designs, such as the variation in width of the table legs. If most of the furniture in the room is modern, then you may want to purchase modern console furniture as well.

    3

Choose a shade of wood that matches the furniture you currently have in the room. For example, if most of your furniture is dark, then you should choose dark-colored wood. You can purchase black, deep walnut, and ebony. Oak and maple are examples of light-colored woods.

    4

Arrange the console furniture. The various pieces of console furniture should not be placed too close to one another. For example, the table and bookshelf should have at least three feet between them. If you place a piece of console furniture in the corner, then you should place the table or bookshelf at the other end of the wall. This will help to draw attention to the corner of the room.

    5

Balance the different pieces of console furniture. If you choose to mix two distinct styles of console furniture, such as modern and classical, then do not place the modern furniture on one side of the room, and the classical furniture on the other side of the room. This will create an uneven look to the style of the room.

Inversion Table Information

Inversion therapy is a relatively new concept in relieving back pain. Although the technique has been used since 400 B.C., it was only in the 1960s that inversion therapy became a known method for exercise, stress relief and holistic development. Modern-day inversion tables have been designed to promote easier, healthier and safer inversion exercises.

Functions

Inversion tables help the user relax and relieve stress by means of inversion therapy, the practice of flipping the human body upside down. Inversion tables today are equipped with jelly-laden cushions that allow the back to rest while the body is inverted. While the participant's back is resting, the discs in the back are massaged.

Purpose

Aside from allowing your body to relax, the inversion table works to promote proper posture, because the body is laid in a straight position. It also massages the spine so the back muscles can reabsorb the fluids usually held stagnant in the spinal column. This can help prevent the onset of swelling discs, hernias and spinal damage.

Benefits

The benefits of practicing inversion therapy and using inversion tables typically include increased flexibility, less susceptibility to backache and injury, improved blood circulation, reduced risk of hypertension and heightened mental alertness. Inversion therapy also offers a sense of thrill and excitement, as the practice of positioning the body at an inverted angle provides exhilaration similar to that of amusement park rides.

Risk

Not all individuals are advised to use inversion tables for therapy. Those who are pregnant or have hernias, high blood pressure, cerebral sclerosis, glaucoma, spinal problems, osteoporosis, ear infections and obesity should not use inversion tables. People using medication such as anticoagulants are also discouraged from undergoing inversion therapy because their blood flow and circulation will be affected by the exercise.

Purchasing

Inversion tables are similar to other pieces of fitness equipment that can be used in the home. Quality inversion tables typically cost around $350, depending on the size and features. When shopping for an inversion table, it is important to check its weight capacity, the range of inversion angles it can make, its assembly and adaptability. It also is important to purchase a table that has passed all quality tests to ensure your safety. It should include a warranty in the event that your table has any problems.

How to Place Decorative Accessories on a Console Table

A console table is a four-legged piece of furniture that will function in any room of a home. These pieces of furniture are versatile. Console tables serve as decoration and have a function. Showcasing home dcor accessories or house a charging station for electronics on the top of your console table. Tables come in a variety of colors, woods, and shapes to match the design of your home. Some have drawers for organizing postage stamps, keys, or small umbrellas. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Gather your dcor accessories for your console table.

    2

Determine if you like linear clean lines or would like a more eclectic look by small groupings of decor accessories.

    3

Place the accessories on the console table. Line up the accessories in a straight row, try all of them on one side of the console table, and put a tall piece in the middle with small pieces placed on both sides of the table. Move them around until a position is pleasing to your eye.

How to Draw a Kitchen Table

The kitchen table is the centerpiece of any kitchen, whether it's being used as a gathering place for family meals (or preparing those meals) or any number of purposes. The tables in many people's kitchens vary as much as the families that use them. Some are more contemporary, some modern. When it comes to drawing your own kitchen table (or the one of your dreams), simply keep in mind basic geometric shapes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Lay your ruler out flat and horizontal in the upper middle of your paper. Use the ruler's edge as a guide to draw a straight horizontal line, sized according to how large or small you want your final table to appear. This line serves as the table's surface, the top edge farthest away from the viewer.

    2

Slide the ruler down a few inches; since the final image is 3-D, the further the next line is away from the first line your drew, the more table top surface area is exposed. Slide the ruler down according to how much area you want visible, and then draw another horizontal line. Make this line longer on each side than the one above it.

    3

Turn the ruler to a 45 degree angle with the right side angled up to the right. Slide the ruler over to the left hand side of the two lines you drew. Draw a 45 degree angled line that connects the two horizontal lines together, and then slide the ruler over to the right hand side, turn it so it angles up to the left, and draw another 45 degree connecting line. You should now have a trapezoidal shape on your paper.

    4

Measure just slightly below the longest horizontal line and draw another, similar line just below it, and then add two small vertical lines that connect these two lines together. This gives the appearance of depth. Now you have your table top surface. Measure in just slightly from the right and left corners of the table top and draw a vertical line on each side, making the table legs.

    5

Flesh out the legs of the table by drawing adjacent lines to these lines and connecting the two lines at the bottom with a horizontal line (they'll appear as very long, thin rectangles when done). Draw thinner rectangle legs just inside of these legs, making these shorter than the ones in the foreground, giving the appearance of distance.

    6

After drawing your table with a pencil, you may get a more finished, defined look by going back over your drawing with black ink. You may also add any decorative details you like.

Country Kitchen Centerpiece Ideas

Country Kitchen Centerpiece Ideas

If your kitchen has a rustic, country theme, table centerpieces can complete the look of the room. Look for earthy elements and warm country colors, and pull natural items in to bring a sense of the great outdoors into your kitchen. As you plan centerpieces, use plants and fruits that are seasonal and that have an additional purpose in the kitchen. Does this Spark an idea?

Mason Jars and Candles

For a simple, inexpensive and elegant country centerpiece, combine candles and Mason jars. Look for the clear glass jars, which are often used in canning, and scrape off any labels so the surface is clear. Choose candles that coordinate with the decoration of your kitchen; for a warm, homey feeling, look for soft cream, yellow, neutral or rose-colored candles. For an eclectic, shabby chic look, find candles and jars in varying sizes and heights. Add finishing touches by tying ribbon or twine bows around the rims of a couple of the jars.

Herb Pots

If you like to use fresh herbs in your cooking, use herb pot centerpieces for your kitchen. Choose small flower pots or decorative jars, and plant the herbs you use most often. Allow the plants to sprout before turning them into centerpieces for the greatest visual effect, and choose a selection of pots and herbs grouped together. Basil, rosemary and thyme will add a soft scent to your table, and you can snip them off when they threaten to overpower the pot. Ground the centerpiece by placing the pots on a decorative tin dish.

Fall Fruit Basket

For a centerpiece that gives a sense of the country in the fall, choose a fruit or vegetable basket. Come autumn, look for fruits and vegetables in the deep, rich colors of fall leaves. You might find small squash, pumpkins, apples, oranges, pomegranates or pears, which, when combined, make a colorful palette. Line the bottom of a decorative basket with hay or fall leaves, and arrange the fruit on top; finish the basket by tying a simple bow out of rough twine on the handle or over the top of the fruit.

Antique Tins and WIldflowers

Make the most of seasonal country wildflowers by using them in centerpieces for your kitchen. Start by finding antique tins to use as vases, or purchase new options in a vintage print. Gather thick bunches of wildflowers, and place them in three tins, which you can group together on the center of a round table for a colorful centerpiece. For a longer rectangular table, you can create a line of flower-filled tins down the center; alternate heights and sizes for an eclectic look.

How to Make Custom Center Consoles

Custom center consoles can be made of wood or fiberglass, depending on the complexity of the design you want. Custom wood consoles are basic designs and can include accessories, but are not usually heavily modified. They can be painted but look more professional when covered in fabric material. Custom fiberglass consoles can be made into almost any design and can be painted with solid colors or graphics. Custom center consoles can take several hours to complete, depending on the design and finish you use.

Instructions

Wood Console

    1

Use cardboard pieces to shape a mockup of the console you want. Use scissors to cut the cardboard to the exact size needed and use tape to temporarily hold it together. Remove the tape once you are satisfied with the mockup.

    2

Place the pieces of cardboard on the MDF board and use them as templates. Trace around the cardboard with a pencil and cut the shapes out with a jigsaw.

    3

Put the console together and use a hammer and nails to secure all of the edges. Hammer the nails so that all of the nail heads are even with the surface of the wood and not sticking out past the wood.

    4

Spray a thick coat of adhesive onto the console and on the backside of the foam. Let each piece become tacky and place the foam on the console. Let the adhesive dry for thirty minutes.

    5

Apply a thick coat of spray adhesive over the foam and on the backside of the fabric material. After waiting five minutes, place the material over the console, cutting out any sections were cup holders or stereo equipment will be placed.

Fiberglass Console

    6

Place large foam blocks where the center console will be. Use a rasping tool and knife to shape the blocks into the desired shape of the console. If more than one block is used, glue them together with a hot glue gun.

    7

Unroll the fleece and cover the newly shaped console with it. The fleece should completely cover the entire console with no area of foam block showing through. Cut the fleece so that at least two inches is left to fold underneath the bottom of the foam blocks.

    8

Coat the fleece with resin by applying it with a paintbrush. The resin needs to soak the fleece and dry until tacky or for about twenty minutes.

    9

Cut and place the fiberglass mat on the resin covered fleece material. Make sure to cut holes in any openings intended for cup holders or stereo equipment. Press the fiberglass mat firmly so that every section of fleece is covered.

    10

Apply body filler to any parts of the fiberglass that are not smooth. The body filler will be sanded smooth, so fill any low areas or gaps in the fiberglass. Allow the filler to dry for thirty minutes.

    11

Sand the filler with 220-grit sandpaper until it is smooth and level with the surface of the fiberglass. Go over the entire console, including the filler and the fiberglass, with 600-grit sandpaper. Once this is finished, use 1000-grit sandpaper to lightly sand over everything one last time.

    12

Spray a thick coat of primer over the entire console and let it dry for thirty minutes. Apply four to six coats of paint, keeping the coats thin to avoid runs. Let each coat dry for five minutes and let the last coat dry for at least six hours before handling it.

Ideas for Painting the Kitchen Dining Table

Ideas for Painting the Kitchen Dining Table

If it has come time to replace that old dining table, but it is not in the budget, a paint can renovation may be the way to go. A new kitchen table could sell for hundreds of dollars, not to mention the cost of getting it delivered. The table you already have is likely in good condition, with the exception of a few nicks and scratches. You can salvage a kitchen table without spending much money. Does this Spark an idea?

Two-Tone Paint Job

To create a shabby chic look, use two different colored paints. For a wood table, sand the tabletop and legs. Be sure to even out scratches. With some elbow grease, you can eliminate most stains. Use a wood conditioner before applying paint. Conditioner will help distribute the paint more evenly preventing certain spots from getting over saturated. Paint the tabletop in a natural color like brown, suede, beige or tan. If you have young children, you may want a darker color so that stains stay hidden. Paint the legs blue. It is best to stick with earthy tones rather than vibrant colors.

Fresh Coat

Some tables just need a fresh coat of paint to look like new again. It is important to avoid using a glossy finish because those paints will be more prone to peeling or sticking to the bottom of glass or hard plastic. Choose a color that is already in your kitchen but not prominent. If you have wallpaper with flowers that are primarily yellow, for instance, buy a paint matching the color of the green stem. To prevent peeling and scratches, coat the tabletop in a clear polyurethane finish. You must allow no fewer than 24 hours for your table to dry fully. Remember that the top layers of paint may dry sooner than the bottom layers.

Stencils

Get the entire family in on the job. Come up with a theme you want your table to have. Remember that you will not be painting your table often, so be sure you do not mind living with the designs you choose. Avoid topical themes like seasons and holidays. Fruit is a nice kitchen idea. Buy stencils of apples, bananas and melons at a craft or hobby store. Tape the stencil directly to the table so you dont have to worry about coloring within the lines.

Before you do anything to the table, however, make a rough copy of your work. Create your design on a blank piece of paper. Practice your design until you get it exactly how you want it before making it permanent.

How to Re-stain a Kitchen Table Properly

How to Re-stain a Kitchen Table Properly

The kitchen table needs an overhaul. The sealer is all but gone and the stain is looking quite worn. To some, this may be a hopeless case, driving them to purchase a new kitchen table. Instead, save your budget by stripping the old finish from the wood and applying new stain. The available products make this project doable for the homeowner who wants to make something new out of something old. Read and follow label directions closely for the best results. To re-stain a kitchen table properly, you must first remove the old finish. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Removing the Old Finish Properly

    1

Place a protective covering on the floor and set the kitchen table on it. Apply a coat of stripper to the top of the table in the same direction as the grain, using a disposable brush.

    2

Remove the stripper with a putty knife. Use a toothpick to remove the stripper within any grooves on the tabletop. Dispose of it in a metal container. Be certain not to remove the stripper before the time suggested by the manufacturer.

    3

Apply another coat of stripper if needed. Remove it following the same instructions as the first coat.

    4

Repeat this method of removing the old stain on the legs of the table. If some of the old finish remains, apply another coat of stripper. After a few minutes, scrub the surface with a coarse steel wool pad.

    5

Clean the wood tabletop and legs thoroughly with mineral spirits and a clean cloth. Allow it to dry, then clean it again if needed. Dry the wood with a clean cloth.

Apply the New Stain and Sealer Properly

    7

Apply the stain with a brush in the same direction as the grain. Do this in thin, even coats to keep the stain looking natural. If the stain manufacturer directs, sand between coats.

    8

Brush on a sealer over the stain to protect it. As with the stain, apply the sealer in thin coats. Allow the sealer to dry and sand it with fine steel wool before adding a second coat.

Small Kitchen Seating Ideas

Small Kitchen Seating Ideas

A kitchen is among the busiest rooms in a house. In a small kitchen, it is important to choose furniture, and a layout, that makes the most of limited space. Does this Spark an idea?

Islands

An island with room enough for four to six stools eliminates the need for a table and chairs. Some islands are designed to store stools underneath, which saves floor space when seating is not needed.

Dining nooks

A small dining area can be created in a corner or against a wall. By placing the table up against the wall(s) and using backless chairs which store away under the tabletop, floor space is kept open. A folding table hinged to a wall can be lowered when the table is not needed. Small stools or cube chairs can be used for seating.

Table Shapes

Round tables typically require less floor space than oval- and rectangular- shaped tables seating the same number of people.

Bench Seating

A single bench pushed up to a table can take the place of two or three chairs and can be pushed underneath, and out of the way, when seating is not required.

How to Attach a Kitchen Table to a Wall

How to Attach a Kitchen Table to a Wall

Attaching a kitchen table to the wall provides a more permanent solution for kitchen seating. This is also a way for parents to childproof their kitchen by eliminating the possibility of the table tipping when a small child pulls on the edge. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Place the stud finder on the wall in the location where you want to attach the table. Slowly move the stud finder horizontally along the wall to locate two side-by-side studs.

    2

Mark the stud locations using a pencil. A stud is needed to support the table's weight once it is attached. A typical drywall connection will not support the table.

    3

Press the table edge to the wall with the base resting naturally on the floor. Line the wall bracket with the wall stud on the underside of the table. Draw a pencil mark on the wall through the bracket screw hole and remove the brackets.

    4

Drill a hole through each marked location and replace the brackets. Drive one 3-inch screw through the bracket to attach it to the wall stud.

    5

Drive one 1/2-inch screw through the top drill section on the wall bracket to attach it to the table.
