Instructions
- 1
Figure out what kind of furniture you want and how it will fit into the rest of the look of the kitchen. You can choose from all kinds of styles including classic, modern and everything in between.
2Plan ahead to help prevent problems. If you feel comfortable enough, go ahead and draw up your own blueprints. If you're not sure you can design your own built-in kitchen table and benches, there are many sets of blueprints available commercially.
3Choose the wood you want to use. Typically, you will need one of the varieties of hardwood. Softwoods, such as pine, may not be able to withstand the rigors of everyday use.
4Measure and cut your pieces. You should put the pieces together before you bolt (or nail) the structure together just to make sure everything fits properly. The table and benches should be the same length for conformity. Typically a built-in table and set of benches are at least four feet long. But you can cut yours to be as long as you need it to be. Sand the pieces carefully to remove any sharp edges that could be a problem for little children.
5Assemble your built-in kitchen table and benches and attach all the parts together. Examine the unit for pieces that are sticking out. If there are final modifications you want to make, you should do that before going on to the next step.
6Protect the wood by applying paint or stain. If you decide to go with paint, you may want to choose a latex-based kind to make it easier to clean up spills. A more classic look can be achieved by staining the wood. Decide on a shade that will go with the rest of your kitchen.
