How to Make a Ping Pong Table Conversion Top

How to Make a Ping Pong Table Conversion Top

Ping pong is a fun table game suitable for most ages and any skill level. However, having a ping pong table in your home can cost you space and money. Being able to convert surfaces you already have, like a pool table or foosball table, saves you space, while building it yourself saves you money. With good preparation and careful execution, homemade ping pong table tops can function just as well as a store-bought table.

Instructions

    1

Measure and cut each MDF board down to 5 feet by 4.5 feet using the circular saw.

    2

Paint one side and the edges of each board with white primer and allow to dry completely.

    3

Paint over the primer with matte green or blue paint and allow to dry completely. Ping pong table paint is available online, although it is more expensive. Green chalkboard paint is often used and provides an excellent texture without the high cost of ping pong paint.

    4

Fasten the two painted MDF boards together using the stainless steel piano hinge. Lay both boards on the ground and attach the hinge to the unpainted sides, one side at a time. The final table dimensions should be 5 feet by 9 feet.

    5

Paint a 2 cm edge along the entire perimeter of the table and a 3 cm line down the middle of the table, lengthwise. Painter's tape should be used to ensure a straight, clean line. Use the white primer for these lines.

    6

Place the completed ping pong table conversion top on a sturdy base. It should be roughly 30 inches high and be able to support the weight and size of the ping pong table. A pool table is often used.

    7

Attach the net across the middle of the table and begin play. Two C-clamps should be included with the net. Attach them on either side of the table with the screws provided, and slide the net over the posts.
