How to Design an End Table

How to Design an End Table

Selecting an appropriate end table requires balancing its size with the size of a sofa or chair. Several factors come into play in choosing a table, such as how formal the room is and what purpose the table will serve. However, almost any table used can be enhanced with a tray, lamp or fabric covering if its size works. In fact, you can use creative techniques to dress up an interesting recycled table to add visual interest to a room. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Define the size of the table needed. Sketch the couch or chair and wall area to picture how large one or more end tables must be. Use a ruler or yardstick to measure space so that you have a basic idea to start designing. Plan the table to fit the dimensions in a round, square or octagonal shape. An end table should meet the height of a sofa or chair arm.

    2

Select the table's basic design and buy one to harmonize with a coffee table or media cabinet in the room. Choose end tables that blend with furniture groupings.

    3

Choose a finish to harmonize with space. Select oak end tables to match oak trim around windows behind a sofa. Buy white end tables to match a white wall behind the sofa. Buy end tables that visually tie together the sofa or chair, lamps, coffee table and any curtains near the furniture.

    4

Create an appropriate surface. Install a glass top to protect an upscale wooden tabletop. Buy a silver serving tray to place on top of a white wicker end table to add elegance. Cut colored vinyl or fabric to place on top of an end table to display art. Use a velvet scarf to hide scratches on a recycled end table.

    5

Add casters or rollers to heavy end tables. Rollers will make it easier to move large end tables for cleaning or reaching an electrical outlet behind the table. Casters or rollers can make the table easy to move if you want to use it as a temporary desk or eating table.
