Foosball Tricks

Foosball Tricks

Regardless of how good you are (or think you are) at foosball, there is probably someone out there that is better than you, and no matter how many times you play him, he will beat you. But this doesn't have to be the case. Mastering the tricks of shooting, passing and defending could be the difference between hanging your head in shame and raising your arms in glory.

3-Rod Passing

The 3-Rod represents the strikers on a real football field. They are the goal scorers, and without mastering these attackers, you will likely lose. The most common trick used by the 3-Rod is a quick pass and immediate shot. Start with either the left- or right-side player with the ball. Bring the ball under control; you have 15 seconds to make your shot according to the official United States Table Soccer Association rules. When the ball is settled, quickly slide the ball horizontally to the center forward and fire the shot as soon as it arrives. Although everyone uses this trick, mastering it is another story.

3-Rod Multiple Passing

If the simple 3-Rod pass is too simple or if your shots are continually saved, multiple passing may create the necessary openings. Instead of quickly shooting once you have passed to the center forward, pass back to one of the wingers. For example, if you have the ball settled at the right forward player, pass the ball to the center forward, then back to the right forward and let loose a quick, powerful shot. Since you are keeping the ball moving, your opponent may not have enough time to set up his defense.

3-Rod Slide Shot

Since 3-Rod passing is so common, a trick that can easily fool a defender is the 3-Rod slide shot. This is when you have the ball at either the right- or left-side forward. Settle the ball and then slide it toward the center player, but instead of passing, shoot using the winger instead. The defender will usually anticipate a 3-Rod pass, which means the near side of the goal may be available.

2-Rod Long Shot

Scoring with your defenders can make the difference, especially if your opponent is consistently stifling your 3-Rod. When you have the ball with one of the 2-Rod players, try the slide shot. This will usually get past your opponent's 3-Rod and may even result in a goal. If not, at least the ball is out of your defensive zone.

Getting the Ball from 5-Rod to 3-Rod

Transition is the key to success; the player with the fastest hands moving from one row to the next will likely win the game. That is why it is essential to master passing from the 5-Rod to the 3-Rod. The best way to do this is by taking your time to settle the ball with your 5-Rod. Diagonally slide the ball through your opponent's 5-Rod to your 3-Rod. But do not put too much behind the pass; you don't want to turn over possession. A soft pass that simply gets past your opponent's 5-Rod is all that is needed.

Tilt Your Players Forward

Attack is important, but if you cannot defend, you will likely lose. To stifle your opponent's chances, tilt your players forward. This provides more coverage for your defense and will make it very difficult for your opponent to get the ball past you.
