How to Remodel in a Contemporary Design

How to Remodel in a Contemporary Design

There are five basic components of contemporary design: color, metal, wood, texture and lighting. When these components are combined, they create a look that is simple and elegant, yet comfortable and inviting. Contemporary design can be difficult to describe, as it is a melange of items and themes strategically woven together to create an inviting and simple decor. Knowing what to include in a contemporary motif is just as important as knowing what to exclude. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Highlight neutral colors with bright accents. Muted colors like beige, white, taupe, cream or brown are a hallmark of contemporary design. To highlight these neutral tones, incorporate bold color accents wherever possible, such as in wall prints, a piece of brightly colored furniture, or colorful throw pillows arranged on neutral-colored furniture. In the dining area, set richly colored place mats on a wood, glass or metal table, or brightly colored place settings on neutral-colored mats.

    2

Use metal accents to reflect the cool, sophisticated motif of contemporary design. Install chrome, nickel or stainless steel bathroom fixtures, kitchen fixtures, appliances, lamps, hooks, art pieces and shelving. You can take it a step further and purchase choice pieces of metal furniture. Don't overdo it though; a key component of contemporary design is moderation.

    3

Display wood accent pieces strategically throughout your home. Wood pieces add warmth to contemporary design, as wood is reminiscent of a fireplace or hearth; arrange wooden picture frames, vases, fruit bowls, flower pots, end tables, coffee tables and shelves to enhance your contemporary motif.

    4

Purchase and distribute textured pieces composed of closely interwoven elements throughout your home. Items like wallpaper, floor rugs, couch pillows, place settings, window coverings, wall hangings in various textures and fabrics like crushed velvet, wool, linen and silk not only make your home seem plush and inviting, but also provide a tactile contrast to your smooth wood and metal accents. Avoid patterned fabrics and textures; remember that the key to contemporary design is simplicity.

    5

Light your home with adjustable level track lighting, and/or tall floor lamps with metal poles and neutral, light-colored fixtures. Use the lighting fixtures to bring into relief the room's texture and varied colors.
