Olympia, the capital of Washington, sits at the southernmost point of Puget Sound, and has commanding views of the Olympic Mountain Range and Mount Rainier. Most winter days in Olympia are cold, gray and wet, with occasional days of snow. When the weather is rough, Olympia has plenty of activities to keep youngsters busy indoors. From skating to theater, you'll find something your child will enjoy.
Indoor Learning
The Hands On Children's Museum gives children an opportunity to explore fun exhibits. Kids can learn and experiment with theme play areas such as emergency vehicles, a stage with costumes, animal hospital and restaurant. Also available are a large water-play table area, air suction experiments and an art room. Nearby is the WET Science Center, a free-admission science center focused on water conservation. Kids can use a water use calculator, learn about what water service employees do and learn about microbes in water. On Saturdays, kids can make a craft to take home while learning about the featured subject.
Indoor Play
Shankz Black Light Mini Golf is a glowing-neon miniature golf course with a jungle theme. 3D glasses are available for an even more interesting view of the glowing elephants and tigers. Party packages are available, and is air hockey, foosball tables, video games and a giant checker board. Skateland is a roller skating rink. Open skate is offered, as are birthday packages. Kids can skate to music, participate in classic skating games and visit the snack bar.
Catch a Show
Capital Playhouse provides a creative and kid-focused space for the arts, with an emphasis on musical theater. Kids can check out performances at the 121-seat theater that include chamber musicals, choir performances and youth acting productions. Workshops and classes are available for children who would like to be involved. Ballet Northwest performs "The Nutcracker" every December. This holiday classic will mesmerize children with the story of Clara, her broken nutcracker doll, and her dream journey into magical lands.
Parks and Recreation Department
The city of Olympia Parks and Recreation Department has several indoor programs for your child to choose from. Winter break day camps are available, where kids can participate in activities including field trips, sports, crafts, swimming, rock climbing, and winter outdoor sports such as sledding and snowshoeing. The parks department also has classes and workshops in subjects including martial arts, crafts, babysitting, gymnastics, magic, soccer, basketball, dance and music.
