How to Tile a Wooden Kitchen Table

Tile can be used to breathe new life into a scratched or unattractive kitchen table. If you have an artistic streak, you can even tile a unique mosaic onto the wooden tabletop using broken tiles or dishes. Applying tile to a wooden table top is a simple process and, rest assured, you can complete this project over the course of one weekend even if you have no experience with tiling or do-it-yourself projects. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Sand the dining table with 200 grit sandpaper to make the surface slightly rough and remove any clear coat which may have been applied to the table previously. Wipe the table with a damp rag to remove any dust from sanding.

    2

Place the tiles onto the dining table to create an attractive pattern, or use pieces of broken tiles to create a mosaic on the table. Make a note of the location of the tiles and cut any tiles to size with a miter saw at this time.

    3

Remove the tiles from the kitchen table. Spread thinset mortar over the top of the table with a notched trowel, dragging the notched edge of the trowel through the mortar to create grooves.

    4

Place the tiles back on the table top in the proper places and press them down into the thinset. You will be able to move the tiles around as you wish while the thinset is wet. When you are satisfied with the placement of the tiles, allow the mortar to dry overnight.

    5

Mix grout in a large container according to the package directions. Spread the grout over the tiles with a trowel or rubber float to fill the crevices between the tiles.

    6

Wipe the tiles in a circular motion with a damp sponge to remove excess grout from the face of the tiles. Allow the grout to dry completely before you use the table.
