How to Design a Contemporary Den

Create a sleek and streamlined space where you and your family and friends can kick back and relax in contemporary style. A den is a common area meant for gathering, hanging out and unwinding. Creating a stylish den that reflects your personal taste makes the space more inviting and a focal room in your home. To successfully achieve a contemporary look in your den, choose a monochromatic color palette; select pieces that have clean lines, yet are comfortable; and stay away from clutter. Paint the walls a warm shade to set a welcoming backdrop for a cozy den. Colors to consider include wheat brown, pumpkin orange or golden yellow.

Cover the floor with a plush area rug that is the same color as the walls, but a shade lighter or darker. This area rug should add to the monochromatic color scheme and bring warmth to the room.

Furnish the room with a comfortable sofa and chairs that have clean lines and coordinate with the color of the walls and floor. A sofa and chairs with straight backs and legs and simple arms are well-suited for this space. Choose comfortable upholstery, such as suede or brushed cotton.

Set a coffee table in front of the sofa. Choose a glass-topped table with silver legs or a lacquered piece that matches the color scheme.

Hang a flat panel television on the wall above a fireplace or above a floating wall shelf. House audio-visual equipment in a cabinet against a wall.

Display a large picture on the wall above the sofa. Choose an image that features geometric prints or a splatter painting. Set the image in a simple frame, or hang the image on the wall without a frame.

Arrange throw pillows along the back of the sofa that exactly match the color of the upholstery or are a shade darker or lighter than the upholstery. Place the pillows side by side, in a straight line along the entire length of the back of the sofa.
