Modern Centerpiece Ideas Using Flowers

Creating your own centerpiece is a cost-effective way to decorate your home or save for an event. To make centerpieces that complement a modern style of dcor, consider using flowers in either white or bold colors and materials like glass and metal as accents for your designs. Does this Spark an idea?

Glass Bouquet

Create a striking centerpiece that's both simple and modern with five to seven glass vases, all with long, slender shapes that will hold a single flower. Select from full round bases with long stems or tall and narrow rectangular vases in varying heights. Mix shapes together to create a centerpiece that is perfect to span the length of a banquet table or a large dining room table. Partially fill the vases with colorful sand and place a long stem flower in each one as if you've dismantled a bouquet. Your centerpiece will complement your modern dcor with monochromatic flowers in different types and sizes.

Flowers with Wire Waves

You can create modern floral centerpieces with roses, tulips and calla lilies in shades of white and with painted wire waves as accents. White is a predominant color in modern design and if you paint the wire with a glossy silver spray paint, you can simulate polished chrome, another element of modern style. It's easy to create the wire waves if you make a jig with nails hammered into a wood plank in a series of equilateral triangles. Line the nails on either side of the face of your plank with the base of the triangles along one side and the tips along the opposite side. The tip nails will be centered between the two base nails. Each of the nails along the two sides should be the same distance apart. The jig will help you make more than one stem of wavy wire that's the same size. To shape 16 to 18-inch craft wire into waves, wrap the wire around the first nail head on the side of your plank with the most nails. Thread your wire up to the nail at the tip of the triangle; wrap the wire around the outside of the nail and then back down to the next base nail in line. Continue wrapping the wire around each successive nail until your wire waves are as long as you need. Remember to leave a straight stem on one end of the wave so your wire element will stand in your centerpiece. You can arrange the flowers in a short vase with the wire waves added for emphasis.

Chrome and Glass

Create a dramatic modern centerpiece for any table with wire spirals and glass flowers in bold colors to complement your decor. Select a clear glass vase that's at least 12 inches high and rectangular. You'll need three 35-inch lengths of 16- to 18-gauge craft wire and a slender wine bottle to make loose spirals. Begin wrapping the wire 12-inches from the end at the top of the bottle. The 12-inch lead will be your stem, so adjust it if your vase is shorter or taller. The spiral should begin at the rim of the vase. Paint the wire silver to contrast with the bold glass flowers and place silver rocks in the vase to hide the stems.
