How to Set Up Turn Tables

How to Set Up Turn Tables

Turn tables are rotating platforms that play vinyl records. Deejays, otherwise known as disc jockeys, use turn tables to play music for nightclubs, events, and weddings. Use this simple guide to setting up turn tables.

Instructions

7 Easy Steps

    1

    Place the turn tables on a heavy duty table. Put a slip mat on each rotating platter, which is the round area where the record will spin. The slip mat will allow the record to spin freely on the turn table. Insert one of the needles into the end of the arm and turn the coupling to secure the needle. Make sure the arm is locked after the needle is in, this will prevent damage to the needle.

    2

    Speaker power should be off and they should be set up on a heavy duty table, the ground, or a tripod made for speakers. They should be set up so that one is to the left and one is to the right of the turntables.

    3

    The mixer power needs to remain off and set up between both turn tables. The cables from the turn tables must reach the mixer.

    4

    Plug the extension chord into the power source (wall plug) and the other end into the power strip. Plug in the mixer, turntables, and two self powered speakers into the power strip.

    There are three audio wires on the back of the turn table that will hook up to the mixer;
    white (left) rca cable, red (right) rca cable, and a ground cable. Plug the white (left) rca cable into channel 1 phono left (L) plug. Plug the red (right) cable into channel 1 phono right (R) plug. Connect the end of the ground cable, a thin black wire, to the ground screw on the back of the mixer. Firmly tighten the by hand. Repeat for turntable two using channel two on the mixer.

    6

    Plug in a one quarter inch mono cable into the left ouput (L) on the mixer and run that cable to the self powered speaker that is located on the left side of the turn table set up. Repeat for the right speaker using the right main output on the mixer.

    7

    Adjust knobs on the speakers and mixer to the zero position. Turn on the power strip, then the turn tables, mixer, and speakers. Place a record on the platter, put the needle on the record, and press the "start" button. Adjust the levels on the mixer and speakers to the desired levels.
