How to Convert a Massive Garage into a Game Room

The best way to add value and worth to your home is to utilize all available space efficiently. If you would like to have a game room in your house and are short on space, consider remodeling the garage into a game room. This is a cost-effective and smart way to best utilize any unused space in the house. Once your room has been given a major face lift, you are ready to experience some excitement and energy. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Call your municipal building department and find out if you are required to have a building permit prior to beginning work. In certain zones, you may be required to have your plan reviewed and inspected by the authorities before any work is begun. In most cases, when a contractor is hired, she will perform this task job for you.

    2

Remove all existing furniture and items from the garage and store them in a safe place.

    3

Clean the garage. Use a broom to get rid of all dust, debris and spiderwebs. Wash the floors with a power washer and allow the surface to dry overnight.

    4

Paint the garage walls in the color of your choice. Mount power plugs into the walls and patch up any existing holes before the paint application.

    5

Decorate the floor. Most garage floors are concrete slabs that do not look very inviting. You may consider adding carpets, acid-staining the concrete or installing hardwood.

    6

Install windows, as garages are generally dark. Use drapes or blinds to add privacy to the game room.

    7

Add appropriate lighting to brighten the room and create a relaxing atmosphere; additionally, install fans as needed for ventilation. Fluorescent lighting is better than halogen lights as it does not heat the room.

    8

Create a layout for the room and move in furniture and game equipment. Add shelves on which to store board games and small equipment. Some furniture requirements include couches and chairs on which guests can relax, and coffee tables on which to play board games.

    9

Move in the gaming equipment and set it in the right places. Ping-pong tables, pinball machines, arcade game machines, hockey tables, pool tables, Foosball tables and dartboards are games commonly seen in such rooms. Alternately, you can create a mini gym in a corner of the room by adding some exercise equipment.

    10

Set up a TV and music system. The TV is great for watching games while the music system will entertain the users of the game room.

    11

Decorate the walls with posters, team logos and vintage game signs. Add potted plants to provide oxygen, as well as atmosphere, to the room.

    12

Keep clean towels and wipes in the room.

    13

Install a mini-refrigerator and stock it with bottled water, other drinks and refreshments.
