How to Use a Storage Trunk As a Coffee Table

How to Use a Storage Trunk As a Coffee Table

A storage trunk coffee table creates an informal look in a living room. Create a vintage feel with a leather trunk, or blend antique and contemporary looks with a cedar chest topped with glass. Use a rattan or bamboo trunk in a living room with a tropical theme, and add an exotic plant. A second trunk could be stood on end as an accent table to continue the motif. Keep guest bedding, extra books, movies and other items out of sight in the trunks. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Place the storage trunk where you plan to set up the coffee table (if you already have a storage trunk available). Sit at one of the seats near it and reach for a glass. If it's too much of a reach, the trunk is too low.

    2

Measure the height of your current coffee table, and decide on the maximum and minimum height you'd prefer if you are going to buy a storage trunk. Measure for maximum length. For example in a small living room a trunk over 3 feet long might obstruct access to a seat or walkway. Note the measurements to take along for shopping.

    3

Select a storage trunk made of a durable material, such as metal, leather, wicker or wood. Vintage and antique trunks will add character to your space.

    4

Clean the trunk. Use a whisk broom or other small brush to remove dust inside and out. Sunlight helps to remove odors. Clean leather with a soft cloth and leather cleaner, then leather conditioner--don't brush. Clean wood or wicker with a damp rag and diluted wood soap. Use as little water as possible to prevent discoloration. Damp wipe metal with any mild cleaner. Use rust cleaner if needed.

    5

Consider the trunk's surface. Smooth wood and metal work well as they are. A good option for any surface is to add tempered glass. Obtain it from a hardware or home improvement store. Measure it to fit or choose a piece of glass larger than the trunk for more tabletop space. Add at least four self-adhesive bumpers under the glass to prevent the glass from sliding.
